U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate the population of older adults in the United States keeps rising as the share of children declines. Americans age 65 and older saw their numbers swell by 13% from 2020 to 2024, while people under 18 fell by 1.7%. Over the past century, the country’s older adult population has climbed greatly: from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 analysis estimates nearly half—about 28 million—of older Americans could need long-term services and support. The same study predicts more than a third may eventually require the resources of a nursing home.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
