CITY OF BOULDER: City Council Declares Nino Gallo Day in Memorial to Inspirational Community Leader

City of Boulder issued the following announcement on Dec. 30.

Mr. Gallo's service to the City of Boulder included time from 1998 to 2000 as a victim advocate for the Boulder Police Department. Most significantly, he was a member of the City's Human Relations Commission from 2002 to 2007, where he served as Vice Chair. His accomplishments on the commission included advocating for City Council to act on immigration reform and his leadership was key to the adoption of Boulder's Celebration of Immigrant Heritage Month. Beyond his dedication to immigrant rights, he understood the importance of treating all workers respectfully and fairly as he strongly advocated for the passing of the initial Living Wage Resolution and adoption of the Failure to Pay Wages Ordinance.

More recently, Mr. Gallo collaborated with the City's Department of Housing and Human Services in supporting new homeowners and those living in such communities such as Ponderosa Mobile Home Park.

His legacy of work in the community began with managing housing resources for immigrant workers and continued into advocacy and financial empowerment education for a broader group of low-income residents. Through his work with developing the Personal Investment Enterprise (PIE) Program, many people have been empowered to meet such goals as owning a home, starting a small business and pursue a post-secondary education.

Mr. Gallo is remembered for being a good friend and valuable colleague, and he is greatly missed by those who had the honor of working with him as well as those who enjoyed his friendship. Beyond his considerable accomplishments, those who crossed paths with him can never forget his kindness and good humor. Mayor Sam Weaver will honor him during the Jan. 5, 2021 City Council meeting.
