CITY OF BOULDER: Boulder Now Accepting Applications for Police Department Master Plan Process Subcommittee

Mentalhealthcar

City of Boulder issued the following announcement on Oct. 8.

The subcommittee is currently comprised of two council members, Junie Joseph and Bob Yates.

The purpose of this subcommittee is to partner with staff in developing, supporting, and ensuring best practices related to the overall planning process and public engagement for the master plan. Community members will serve as advisors and ambassadors on the master plan process with an emphasis on community engagement processes. Discussion of policy issues or plan content will not be part of the subcommittee’s purview.

Process subcommittee meetings will be held on the second Thursday of every month from 2 to 3 p.m. Process subcommittee members will also sometimes be asked to review materials between meetings. Due to COVID-19, meetings will take place remotely until it is deemed safe to meet in person. The time commitment is expected to be between 18 months and two years.

The Boulder Police Department Master Plan was last updated in 2013. Since then, several social and technological changes have occurred that have impacted the police department and the need to update its master plan. Primarily, increasing local and national concern about police reform indicates a need for in-depth examination of community needs and utilization of police department resources. The police department master plan process will include robust community engagement, as well as integration of the city’s racial equity planning commitments.

Individuals who wish to be considered for this volunteer opportunity should send an email to BPDProcessSubcommittee@bouldercolorado.gov by 5 p.m. on Oct. 22, 2020.

Please answer the following questions in your email:

  • Why do you want to be on the Police Master Plan Process Subcommittee?
  • Which community groups and populations do you have relationships with and how would you act as an ambassador to those groups to help them engage with the Police Department Master Plan process?
  • What particular/special expertise or experience would you bring to the Police Master Plan Process Subcommittee?
  • Would you be available during the scheduled Police Master Plan Process Subcommittee meetings on the second Thursday of each month from 2 to 3 p.m.?
Process subcommittee applications will be discussed at the Police Master Plan Process Subcommittee meeting on Nov. 5, 2020, as well as the Boulder City Council Meeting on Nov. 10, 2020.
