City of Boulder issued the following announcement on Sept. 25.
The City of Boulder has issued an emergency order prohibiting alcohol sales at bars, restaurants and clubs between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.
The order goes into effect on Sept. 25 at 5 p.m. and will last through Oct. 8 at noon, unless further amended or extended. The order restricts alcohol beverage sales to end consumers for on-premises consumption between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. and applies to 199 businesses within Boulder city limits. Under the current state order, on-premises alcohol consumption ends at 11 p.m. in Boulder.
The intent of the order is to slow the increasing spread of coronavirus among young people in Boulder. New cases of COVID-19 have been on the rise for nearly three weeks in Boulder County, with the vast majority due to transmission among people aged 18-22, particularly those attending the University of Colorado at Boulder and living in the University Hill neighborhood.
Boulder County is currently operating under the state’s Safer at Home Level 2 restrictions. If COVID-19 cases continue to rise, the county is at risk of moving from Safer at Home Level 2 to Safer at Home Level 3, which would increase restrictions for the community and local businesses.
“Alcohol can play a big part in social gatherings,” said City Manager Jane Brautigam. “We are hoping this order will help curb the current case increase we are seeing among younger members of the community. We understand that this order may be frustrating for bars and restaurants that sell alcohol, but the intent is to prevent the city from reverting to Safer at Home Level 3, which would place a further burden on local businesses.”
In addition to this latest order, the city is operating under several other orders designed to protect the health and safety of our community during the current increase in COVID-19 cases. The city reminds the community to follow all recommended COVID-19 health and safety guidelines, as well as state and local orders. These orders include:
- Boulder County’s public health order that states:
- Gatherings of any size within the city limits of Boulder of anyone 18-22 years old are prohibited.
- Residents of identified properties must stay at home except for Essential Activities or Essential Travel as defined in the health order.
- The State of Colorado’s Safer at Home order.
- The State of Colorado’s mandatory face covering order, requiring people in Colorado who are 11 years and older to wear a covering over their noses and mouths
- The Boulder County Public Health and City of Boulder mandatory face covering order that requires use of a face covering when unable to keep six feet of distance apart.
