Brighton City Manager Michael Martinez is pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Domenico as Chief of Police for the Brighton Police Department. Domenico has served as interim police chief since October, following the retirement of Chief Paul Southard.
Prior to this role, Domenico was the deputy chief of police, where he served as a strategic advisor to the police chief and provided day-to-day management of the police department.
“Chief Domenico brings more than 18 years of dedicated law enforcement experience to this position. He has proven leadership abilities, a track record of instituting proactive policing strategies, and a commitment to the safety of our residents,” City Manager Michael Martinez said. “He has a strong work ethic and has earned the respect from the community and his peers and I am excited to have him lead the department.”
Domenico was selected after a nationwide search and process that allowed for input from Brighton Police Department staff (through surveys and in-person discussion), the Fraternal Order of Police, the District Attorney’s Office, community stakeholders, and city leadership. Domenico continually excelled in every step of the process and articulated a strong vision for the Brighton Police Department as it addresses the safety and staffing challenges of our growing community with integrity and compassion.
Domenico has served the Brighton Police Department since 2004, where he started as a patrol officer. Since that time, he has also worked as a detective, a patrol and investigations sergeant, and a patrol commander.
Domenico earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and law enforcement administration from Colorado State University and a master’s degree in law enforcement and public safety leadership from University of San Diego. He is also a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command.
During his time with the Brighton Police Department, Domenico played an instrumental role in implementing a program to more effectively investigate crimes of sexual violence, while providing better services to survivors of sexual violence. He also oversaw the implementation of the numerous innovative initiatives for the department, including body-worn and fleet cameras. In 2015, Domenico was named Brighton Police Employee of the Year.
