Colorado track and field began the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 14 with three athletes earning medals at Drachman Stadium in Tucson, Arizona.
The event marked an important start for the team as they competed against some of the top athletes in the nation. The competition saw strong performances from both distance runners and field event specialists.
Abbey Nechanicky led much of the women’s 10,000-meter race before finishing fourth with a time of 34:26.16, earning all-conference honors. In the javelin events, Gustavo Alfonso placed seventh in the men’s competition with a throw of 63.46 meters, while Alaina Fantaski achieved a personal best of 47.01 meters to secure eighth place in the women’s event.
On the track, Danny Tragarz advanced to Saturday’s final in the men’s 400-meter hurdles after placing second overall in his preliminary round with a time of 50.08 seconds. Ashley Jones finished ninth in the women’s 10k with a time of 34:49.48, narrowly missing out on a podium spot, while Dean Casey placed tenth in the men’s race at that distance.
Competition will continue Friday evening starting with preliminaries for other events as Colorado aims to add more medals during this championship meet.
