Colorado track and field athletes competed on April 18 at three meets in California, with notable performances highlighted by Avery Pearson’s achievement in the women’s 800 meters at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
The event was significant for the Colorado team as Pearson ran a time of 2:00.91 in the elite section of the women’s 800 meters, finishing fourth overall. This result ranks her second all-time in Colorado history and fifth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association this season.
Other standout performances included Dean Casey, who set a personal best of 28:17.16 in the men’s 10,000 meters to finish eleventh in his section, improving his No. 6 all-time mark for Colorado. Riley Burkey achieved a personal best of 2:09.42 in the women’s 800 meters, breaking two minutes and ten seconds for her first time.
In distance events on Friday, James Overberg posted a personal-best time of 13:32.53 in the men’s 5000 meters to move into tenth place all-time at Colorado while placing fifth in his heat. Jessie Secor also recorded a personal best with a time of 15:30.66 to improve her ninth-place program ranking and finish fifteenth overall among women competitors.
Freshman Holly Barker broke sixteen minutes for the first time with a performance of 15:55.42 to place third in her heat for the women’s 5000 meters, while Keegan Smith finished eighth after running under fourteen minutes for his first time with a mark of 13:58.75.
In field events, Lucas Williams achieved a major personal record by throwing the hammer to a distance of 61.65 meters (202-3), which places him fifth all-time among Colorado athletes.
Competition will continue Sunday starting at noon Mountain Time.
