The University of Colorado men’s golf team finished in seventh place at the 19th annual San Diego R.E. Lamkin Invitational, which concluded on March 10 in Chula Vista, California.
The result marks a slight drop for the Buffaloes, who were in fifth after two rounds but ended with a team score of 2-over 866. The tournament was won by co-host University of San Diego, which posted a 26-under par 838 to edge out Long Beach State by two strokes. Brigham Young University, St. Mary’s, and co-host San Diego State rounded out the top five teams.
First-year graduate transfer Jackson Rivera led Colorado by tying for 12th individually with a total score of 3-under 213. Rivera recorded four birdies in his final round and played the event’s toughest holes at just one over par across three days. Senior Hunter Swanson tied for 24th after finishing with a total score of one over par, while sophomore Parker Paxton tied for 30th at two over par.
Head coach Roy Edwards said, “It was just a tough day in general. We can’t have multiple guys shoot over mid-70s. We did that today and went backwards. Jackson had a nice event overall and everyone had some good moments for the most part. We will work on getting more consistent, and this team has always done a good job of regrouping and responding to the challenge. I expect this to be no different.” Junior Brandon Knight finished tied for 38th and junior Ty Holbrook placed 65th.
BYU’s Kihei Akina claimed medalist honors with an eight-under-par final round to finish at fourteen under overall, narrowly defeating Long Beach State’s Alejandro De Castro by one stroke.
The Buffaloes are scheduled to return to action next Monday at Arizona’s Thunderbirds Intercollegiate in Tucson.
