The Colorado Buffaloes women’s tennis team will travel south for another weekend of conference matches, following a split weekend that included an upset victory, according to a March 11 announcement.
The upcoming matches are significant as the Buffaloes look to build on recent momentum and improve their standing in the Big 12 Conference. The team recently defeated No. 28 Oklahoma State and moved up to No. 51 in the rankings, their highest position since 2024.
Head coach Anthony Pham said, “It was a nice win for us last weekend. And for us we just want to keep building. Every match we play from here on out will be against a good team in conference.” Aya El Sayed was named Big 12 Player of the Week after defeating No. 53 Olivia Lincer in straight sets.
Colorado is set to face No. 20 University of Central Florida on Friday at the USTA National Campus, followed by a match against No. 36 University of Houston on Sunday at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility. The Buffaloes have played UCF only once before, losing last year at home. UCF currently holds a 10-2 overall record and is ranked No. 80 in doubles with Olivia Bergler and Lauren Seye.
Pham said, “Central Florida is always a strong program which will be a challenge for us,” adding that playing Houston away presents different challenges due to conditions. Colorado leads the series against Houston with five wins out of eight meetings since their first matchup in 1979. Houston has improved this season with an 11-2 record and features the ranked doubles pair Sophie Schouten and Chems Doha Zeghlouli at No. 89.
“This will be a great opportunity for us, I know the team is excited to get on the road and play two good teams,” Pham said.
