Aya El Sayed was named Big 12 Player of the Week on Mar. 10 after a strong weekend performance for the Colorado Buffaloes women’s tennis team.

The recognition comes after El Sayed went undefeated in singles matches over the weekend, including an upset victory against No. 53 Olivia Lincer in straight sets on Sunday. Although the Buffaloes lost as a team on Friday, El Sayed also defeated Kansas State’s Maralgoo Chogsomjav.

El Sayed, who is from Alexandria, Egypt, has achieved eight ranked career singles and doubles victories during her time at Colorado. She currently holds a season record of 5-5 in both singles and doubles play. Her career achievements include holding the team’s highest number of career singles victories at 55 and ranking No. 30 in program history for total wins. She is also No. 10 in singles wins at the No. 1 spot, No. 35 in combined singles and doubles wins with a total of 96, and tied at No. 5 with partner Pia Rebec for most doubles wins at the No. 1 position with 14.

The last time a Colorado tennis player received this honor was Antonia Balzert in 2023 when Colorado was still part of the Pac-12 Conference. The previous Big 12 Player of the Week for Colorado was Monica Milewski in 2010, making El Sayed only the third Buffs player to earn this award since then.

El Sayed’s achievement highlights her continued impact on the program and marks another milestone for Colorado women’s tennis.
